AGING WELL – THRIVING NOT SURVIVING

Self-talk is important when it comes to maintaining a positive self-image. One of my least favorite ways I hear people describe themselves as looking is “old”. What does it mean to look old? I just turned 58 last year and you will never hear me describe myself as old. If I’m so lucky as to make it to 120 years old, you will still never hear me call myself old.

How you feel about your age and aging is all a state of mind. My marketing director is half my age, about to turn 30. He thinks he’s getting old. How silly! You are as old as you feel. I believe at any age with good health, diet and exercise, you can live youthfully.

How does one live youthfully? Here’s some advice I’d like to share from a 58-years-young man…

TREAT YOURSELF

We always think we never have enough to treat ourselves, but it is a must. This is especially true as you get older. When we make time for self-care, whether it be a massage, shooting a gun at the range, private dinner or investing in the occasional laser or stem cell procedure, we tell ourselves that we matter. We usually don’t need to be told to treat ourselves when we’re in our 20’s. In fact, we sometimes overdo it when we’re “young”. However, with age and the responsibilities that come with it, we often neglect to make ourselves a priority.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating for brash consumerism, nor am I trying to promote my own practices. I myself make time for massages on occasion when the workload begins to take its toll and have a minimum of one 2-hour massage per week. More often than not, I still invest in products that benefit my health, including the appearance of my skin and the thickness of my hair. I treat myself to a good dinner out when I can.

At home, I do laser hair restoration with the Capillus 312 Laser Device 6 minutes every day and LED facial treatments 3-4 times per week for 17 minutes each. I have also done six 30-million-count umbilical cord blood stem cell infusions over the course of the past year. Finally, work never gets in the way of me simply taking the time to go for a walk and take in the beauty around me.

TRY NEW THINGS FOR YOUR HEALTH

There’s nothing wrong with balancing yourself with a day dedicated to pure adrenaline at Magic Mountain! I also find that yoga is a relaxing, low-impact way to center myself and get through the week. Though my body-building days are in the past, I still work out at least 3 times a week. I don’t let anything get in the way of maintaining an active lifestyle. None of these things are expensive or too time-consuming to include in my weekly routine.

I do stem cell injections on occasion for anti-aging and am seeing if stem cells may offer any promise for symptoms related to having diabetes. I’m grateful to be working in the field of regenerative medicine and for all the opportunities I have to practice what I preach.

STRESS CAN BE DEADLY

Ideally, we already developed strong stress-reducing abilities in our youth. Unfortunately, however, this is not the case for all of us.

Stress can be a silent killer. We ‘worry’ as if worrying will prevent something bad from happening. The truth is that worrying guarantees that something bad will happen… to your health. Stress has a detrimental impact on your energy levels and over time degrades health whether or not the stress leads to a catastrophic heart attack or other issues.

Whether it’s reading a book or exercising, take time to eliminate stressors and remember to keep up on self-care!

SAY ‘YES’ TO MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Really, we should be saying ‘yes’ to more opportunities thrown our way from the beginning. Regrettably, most people do not.

I don’t believe in focusing on regret, but most of us if given the opportunity would do something different in our past. Most often it is the chances we passed up that we regret, not the times we said ‘yes’ and things didn’t work out. Always be responsible and when taking a risk, make sure it’s a measured one. But if you don’t take any chances, you won’t live.
